Robotic surgery, also known as robot-assisted surgery, is a type of minimally invasive surgery that utilizes robotic technology to aid in surgical procedures. Instead of a surgeon operating directly on a patient, they control robotic arms that have tiny surgical instruments attached to them. The surgeon uses a console that provides a high-definition, 3D view of the surgical area, and the robotic arms mimic the surgeon’s movements, providing greater precision and control. In this blog post, we’ll discuss why robotic surgery is used, the advantages it offers, and its various uses.
Robotic surgery was first introduced in the early 2000s as a way to assist surgeons in performing complex surgical procedures. The technology was initially used in a few select areas, such as prostate surgery, but it has since expanded to include a wide range of procedures across various medical specialties. Robotic surgery is often used when traditional surgery is not an option due to a patient’s health condition or when the surgeon needs greater precision and control during the procedure.
Robotic surgery offers several advantages over traditional surgery, including:
Minimally invasive: Robotic surgery is minimally invasive, meaning that it involves smaller incisions than traditional surgery. This leads to less pain, scarring, and a shorter recovery time.
Greater precision: The robotic arms used in robotic surgery offer greater precision and control than a surgeon’s hands alone. This leads to less damage to surrounding tissues and a reduced risk of complications.
3D visualization: The surgeon controls the robotic arms from a console that provides a 3D view of the surgical area. This allows the surgeon to see the area in greater detail than traditional surgery.
Reduced blood loss: The precision of robotic surgery leads to less blood loss during the procedure.
Shorter hospital stay: Patients who undergo robotic surgery typically have a shorter hospital stay than those who undergo traditional surgery.
Robotic surgery is used across various medical specialties, including:

I have known Dr Prashant Kumar for over a decade as a surgeon as well as a colleague. Medical professionals say that no one else can judge a surgeon better than an anesthesiologist. Being one myself, I cannot vouch for Dr Prashant any further than by asserting the fact that I got myself operated by him 10 days back with full confidence and faith in him. As a personality, he is a gem of a person, very kind, helpful, and caring. As an anesthesiologist and a patient, I totally recommend him for any surgical consultation! 🙂
